Category: Pool Pump Air Bubbles
Air bubbles returning through the pool return jets — or visible air in the pump strainer basket — is one of the most common pool problems and one of the most misdiagnosed. The pump is pulling air into the system somewhere on the suction side, and that air has to go somewhere: usually out the return jets as visible bubbles.
The diagnostic sequence matters. Bubbles only when the pump starts (then clears) point to a loose union or lid that seals under pressure. Continuous bubbles throughout the pump cycle indicate a persistent suction leak — lid O-ring, suction-side fitting, cracked housing, or skimmer throat seal. Bubbles only at low water levels mean the skimmer is pulling air directly. Each cause has a different fix. This section covers every source of pool pump air intrusion with a systematic diagnostic approach and specific repair steps for each cause.

A pump that primes then loses it after 10–20 minutes has a slow suction-side air leak — not a failing pump. The leak is too small to prevent cold priming… Read the Guide →
