Do This Before Hitting the Breaker

Before you power the pump on for the first spring cycle, do a 5-minute visual inspection. Look at the pump housing for any visible cracks from freezing. Check the drain plugs — are they back in? A pump with drain plugs still out will run dry and damage the shaft seal immediately. Check the O-ring on the strainer lid — it sat all winter and likely needs lubrication before it will seal properly. And make sure the suction valves are open — I’ve been called out for pumps “not starting” that had the ball valve shut from winterization and simply needed to be opened.

Once visual checks are done, prime the strainer housing with a garden hose (fill until water stops draining down), reseat the lid, then start the pump. If it starts and primes normally — great. If it doesn’t start at all, or starts then immediately shuts off — work through the causes below.

5 Reasons Pool Pumps Fail at Spring Startup

1. Dead Start Capacitor — About 45% of Winter Startup Failures

Capacitors degrade in storage, especially if they experience temperature extremes over winter. A capacitor that was marginal at the end of last season often won’t survive the first startup attempt in spring. 2. Seized Motor Shaft — About 20% of Cases

A motor shaft that sat idle for 5–6 months can develop surface corrosion or dried lubricant that binds the shaft. Symptom: motor makes no sound at all, or hums loudly without any shaft movement, and the thermal overload trips immediately. Test: with power locked out, try to rotate the shaft by hand (through the back of the motor, via the cooling fan). If it won’t turn at all, the shaft is seized. Sometimes, tapping the shaft end with a rubber mallet while someone momentarily applies power can free a lightly seized shaft. A severely seized shaft usually means motor replacement.

3. Priming Failure — About 20% of Cases

All the water drained out of the system during winterization, and the pump needs to be primed before it can build suction. If the pump motor runs but pressure stays at zero and there are no air bubbles clearing from the strainer basket, the system needs more aggressive priming. Fill the strainer housing completely, fill the skimmer throat if accessible, then start the pump. It may take 2–3 fill-and-start cycles on a system that was fully drained. 4. Tripped GFCI or Breaker — About 10% of Cases

Power was turned off to the pump circuit at the breaker for winter and the breaker tripped while in the off position. Reset at the panel. Also check that the timer is in the ON position or in manual override — a timer set to the wrong time from the winter will not start the pump even if everything else is fine.

5. Freeze Damage You Didn’t Catch in the Visual Inspection — About 5%

A hairline crack in the volute or a damaged union fitting that wasn’t visible before startup becomes apparent as soon as the system pressurizes. Spring Startup Sequence — The Right Order

  1. Reinstall drain plugs in the pump volute (both of them). Verify the filter drain plug is reinstalled.
  2. Remove all return jet expansion plugs (pool winterization plugs). Remove the Gizzmo from the skimmer if installed.
  3. Raise pool water level to mid-skimmer if needed. The pump can’t prime below that level.
  4. Open all suction and return valves fully.
  5. Lubricate the strainer lid O-ring with Magic Lube. Seat the lid firmly.
  6. Fill the strainer housing with a garden hose until water stops draining down into the lines.
  7. Start the pump. Watch for priming within 90 seconds. If it doesn’t prime, shut off and refill.
  8. Once primed, check the pressure gauge. It should read in the normal range for your system within a few minutes of startup.
  9. Inspect all connections for leaks under pressure.
  10. Run the pump for 2–3 hours, then test water chemistry.

How long does it take a pool to be ready after opening?

Water chemistry takes 24–48 hours to fully stabilize after opening treatments (shock, algaecide, balancing chemicals). The pump should run continuously during this period. Water clarity takes 24–72 hours depending on how clean the pool was when closed and how well it was covered over winter. A pool opened from a properly installed winter cover typically clears faster than one with a cheap cover that leaked.

My pool pump starts in spring but runs louder than last year — should I be concerned?

Yes. Increased noise after winter usually means the bearings developed some surface corrosion during storage, or a shaft seal that was borderline last fall has stiffened. Run the pump for a few hours and listen — sometimes the noise decreases as the pump warms up and lubricants redistribute.
