The Pump Circulates, the Filter Cleans — Know the Difference

This distinction matters for diagnosis. The pool pump creates flow — it pulls water in from the skimmer and drains, pushes it through the filter, and returns it to the pool. The filter removes particles. If the pump is running and you have good flow from the return jets, the pump is doing its job. Cloudy water means the filter isn’t cleaning effectively, the chemistry is off, or the circulation pattern isn’t reaching all zones of the pool.

1. Filter Pressure and Condition — First Thing

What is your filter pressure reading? If it’s 8+ PSI above your baseline, the filter is clogged and needs cleaning. A clogged filter passes water through faster without actually filtering it — particles bypass the overloaded media and go back to the pool. Backwash your sand or DE filter. 2. Water Chemistry — Second

Cloudy water is almost always a chemistry problem when the filter is clean and pressure is normal. The most common chemistry causes: pH too high (above 7.8 makes chlorine less effective), insufficient free chlorine (below 1 ppm allows bacteria and algae), high total dissolved solids, or a calcium saturation issue creating cloudiness from calcium carbonate precipitation.

Test the water with a 5-way test kit (not just strips — strips aren’t accurate enough for cloudy water diagnosis). Target: pH 7.4–7.6, free chlorine 2–4 ppm, alkalinity 80–120 ppm, calcium hardness 200–400 ppm.

3. Run Time — Is the Pump Running Long Enough?

A pump that runs 4 hours per day on a 20,000-gallon pool isn’t turning the water over enough. The standard guideline is turning the full pool volume over at least once per day — your pump’s flow rate determines how many hours that takes. A 1.5 HP pump typically moves 40–50 gallons per minute. At 40 GPM, a 20,000-gallon pool takes 500 minutes (8.3 hours) for one full turnover. If you’re running significantly less, increase run time.

4. Dead Zones — Is Water Reaching All Parts of the Pool?

Pool return jet direction determines where water circulates. Returns aimed straight out push water to one area; returns aimed across the pool and slightly downward circulate water more completely. If you have a consistently cloudy corner or end, the return jet nearest that area may be aimed poorly. Adjust return jet fittings to create a circular flow pattern throughout the pool.

5. Algae — Green or Persistent Cloudy After Chemistry Fix

If water chemistry is being maintained and the filter is clean but water stays cloudy or has a greenish tint, algae is establishing. Algae cloud water before it becomes visibly green. Shock treatment (high-dose chlorine, typically 1 pound of calcium hypochlorite per 10,000 gallons) breaks the early algae bloom. Run the pump continuously for 24–48 hours after shocking.

When the Pump Might Actually Be the Problem

Rarely, the pump itself contributes to cloudy water: a severely clogged impeller reduces flow to the point where the filter can’t turn water over fast enough. My pool is clear in the morning but gets cloudy as the day goes on — why?

This pattern usually indicates the pump isn’t running during the day, combined with high bather load or warm water temperatures. Chlorine depletes faster in warm water and with more swimmers. Run the pump during the day when UV exposure and bather activity are highest. If the pump already runs all day and this still happens, increase your chlorine dosing.

Pool water is clear but still looks a bit green — is that algae?

Possibly. Early-stage algae makes water look green but clear rather than cloudy — the particles are still small. Shock treat it now before it gets worse. Algae that looks clear-green in the morning can be visibly cloudy-green by afternoon in warm weather. Test chlorine — if it’s below 1 ppm and water is green-tinted, shock it.

Can my pump cause cloudy water by running too much?

No. More pump runtime means more filtration, which means clearer water (assuming filter and chemistry are correct). There’s no such thing as running the pump too much for water clarity. The only “too much” is energy cost and wear on the motor.

My sand filter is running fine but the water is still cloudy — should I replace the sand?

Sand filters need sand replacement every 5–7 years. Old, worn sand has smooth surfaces that don’t trap particles effectively and may have channeling (paths of least resistance through the sand). If your filter is 6+ years old with original sand and you’re consistently fighting cloudy water despite correct chemistry, sand replacement ($60–100) is worth doing.
