One correction most people need before they start: the IntelliFlo doesn’t display numbered error codes the way some equipment does. How to Read the Alarm Log First
Before diagnosing any alarm, check the alarm log. The IntelliFlo stores up to 10 alarms with timestamps — so if the pump stopped overnight and you’re looking at a cleared screen in the morning, the log tells you what happened and when. To access it: press the Menu button, scroll to Diagnostics, then Alarm Log. You’ll see the last 10 alarms with the time each occurred. An alarm that happened at 2:47am on a hot night tells you something very different than one that happens every day at noon.

Priming Alarm (Red LED — Pump Stopped)
The most common IntelliFlo alarm. The pump ran at full priming speed and couldn’t detect adequate water flow within the “Max Priming Duration” you’ve set in the priming menu. After five consecutive failed priming attempts, the alarm becomes permanent and requires holding the Reset button — a single press won’t clear it.
What to check, in order:
- Is there water in the pump strainer basket? Fill it completely before restarting
- Is the pool water level above the skimmer throat? Low water pulls air instead of water
- Are all suction valves fully open? A partially closed main drain or skimmer valve prevents priming
- Is the pump lid O-ring seated and lubricated? This is the most common source of air intrusion
- Check for air bubbles in the basket while running — visible bubbles confirm a suction air leak at a fitting or union
- Inspect the impeller for debris — a clogged impeller prevents the pump from moving enough water to detect as “primed”

Drive Over Temperature (Red LED — Pump Stopped)
The drive board inside the IntelliFlo reached 54.4°C (130°F). The pump first reduces speed to try to cool down — if that doesn’t work within the drive’s threshold, it stops completely. This is a safety shutdown, not a failure. The drive is protecting itself.
What to check:
- Is the drive compartment vent blocked? Leaves, spider webs, and debris block the cooling fan inlet. Clear it — this is the cause in a majority of summer over-temp alarms
- Is the equipment pad in direct sun? Ambient air temperature matters — a pump in full afternoon Arizona sun runs significantly hotter than one in shade
- Is the pump running at maximum speed continuously? High RPM for extended periods generates heat in the drive. Reducing the maximum speed or adding rest periods in the schedule prevents this
- Is the drive compartment sealed with the lid on correctly? An open or improperly latched drive compartment disrupts the cooling airflow path
A shade structure over the equipment pad is the single most effective thing I recommend for repeated over-temp alarms. A $30 shade cloth extended the life of three IntelliFlos I’ve worked on that were in direct southwest sun.
Over Current Alarm (Red LED — Pump Stopped)
Sometimes displayed alongside fault code F90059. The motor is drawing more current than the drive can deliver safely, and the drive shut down to protect itself. This sounds like an electrical problem — and sometimes it is — but the most common causes are hydraulic.
Check hydraulics before the drive:
- Deadheaded pump — all valves closed so water has nowhere to go. The pump spins against zero flow and immediately overloads. Confirm every return and suction valve is fully open
- Clogged impeller — debris binding the impeller creates mechanical resistance that overloads the drive. Turn off power, wait 4 minutes, open the basket, manually spin the impeller
- Pump running dry — no water means the motor runs with no hydraulic load resistance but at maximum current draw. Check water level and basket
- Undersized supply wiring — voltage drop under load causes the motor to draw excess current to compensate. Check voltage at motor terminals with a multimeter while pump runs — should be within 10% of rated voltage

Low Voltage Alarm (Red LED — Pump Stopped)
The IntelliFlo’s drive requires a minimum supply voltage — typically 208-230V for standard models. When supply voltage drops below 170V, the drive faults to protect itself from the excess current draw that low voltage causes. The drive contains capacitors that stay powered long enough to save current run parameters before it shuts down.
Check voltage at the motor’s supply terminals with a multimeter while the pump is running — not just when it’s stopped. Voltage often looks fine at rest but drops under load if the wiring is undersized for the run length. A 50-foot run on undersized wire may deliver 230V at rest and 198V under load. If voltage at the terminals reads below 207V while running, the wiring is the problem — consult a licensed electrician for wire sizing. Do not run the pump until the wiring issue is resolved.
High Voltage Alarm (Red LED — Pump Stopped)
Two different causes, both triggering the same alarm. The first is excessive supply voltage from the panel — uncommon, but check the panel voltage if nothing else explains it. The second — and far more often the actual cause — is an external water source spinning the pump impeller when it’s supposed to be off.
This happens when water feature returns, waterfall plumbing, or spa jets create back-pressure that spins the pump impeller in reverse when the pump stops. That reverse rotation generates voltage on the drive’s internal DC bus, triggering the high-voltage alarm. The fix is a check valve on the discharge line — it prevents back-pressure from reaching the pump. I’ve installed check valves to fix this specific alarm on water-feature installations several times. Internal Error (Red LED — Pump Stopped)
The drive’s self-monitoring software detected an internal fault it can’t categorize. If it clears and doesn’t return, it was likely a transient power event — a voltage spike, brownout, or surge. If it returns consistently, the drive board is failing and needs replacement. Warnings — Yellow LED, Pump Keeps Running
Warnings don’t stop the pump — the yellow LED illuminates and the pump continues running at a reduced or limited condition. No reset is needed, but the warning tells you something needs attention.
- Speed Limit Warning — the pump hit the maximum speed you’ve set in the Min/Max menu and can’t go higher. If your system needs more flow, increase the max speed setting. If the current max speed is already appropriate, a restriction in the plumbing is preventing the pump from reaching its target flow
- Pressure Limit Warning — the pump hit the max pressure set in Min/Max. Usually means the filter needs cleaning — as filter media loads, system pressure rises until it hits this limit. Clean the filter and the warning clears
- Flow Limit Warning — the pump hit the max flow rate. Reduce the target flow or increase the flow limit. Often shows up after a filter cleaning when restriction drops and the pump suddenly achieves higher-than-expected flow
- Drive Derating (IntelliFlo3 VSF) — drive is reducing speed to protect itself from overheating or over-current. The pump continues at a lower speed. Accompanies overheat or over-current conditions — address those root causes
Blank Screen — No Display at All
A completely blank IntelliFlo screen with no backlight is different from an alarm — it usually means the display board or the connection between the display and the drive has failed. Turn the breaker off, wait four minutes, and restore power. If the screen remains blank, check the ribbon cable connection between the display panel and the drive board — it’s inside the drive compartment and can loosen from vibration or moisture. A blank screen that won’t respond at all after a power cycle typically means the display board needs replacement. The drive board may be fine.
Preventing IntelliFlo Alarms
Clean the basket weekly — a restricted basket leads to priming alarms and over-current conditions. Keep the drive compartment vent clear; I blow it out with compressed air at every spring opening. Set the Max Priming Duration to 10 minutes to give the pump adequate time to prime in systems with long suction runs — the default is often set too short for larger installations. Check that your Min/Max speed, pressure, and flow settings reflect your actual system — an out-of-the-box configuration for a different pool size generates unnecessary warnings from day one. And if you have a water feature, spa, or elevated return — install a check valve on the discharge side before the pump ever generates a high-voltage alarm.
Pentair IntelliFlo Error Codes FAQ
How do I reset a Pentair IntelliFlo alarm?
Fix the cause of the alarm first — pressing Reset without addressing the fault just triggers the alarm again immediately. Once you’ve resolved the condition (cleared the impeller, fixed the air leak, restored water level, etc.), press the Reset button on the keypad. For a permanent priming alarm (after 5 failed attempts), hold Reset for several seconds rather than a quick press. The red LED should go off and the pump should restart on its schedule.
Why does my IntelliFlo keep showing a priming alarm?
The pump can’t detect enough water flow during the priming attempt. The lid O-ring is the most common cause — remove it, inspect for cracking or flattening, lubricate with Teflon lubricant and reseat. Also check the basket is full of water before starting, water level is above the skimmer, and all suction valves are open. If the alarm recurs after every startup, there’s a persistent air leak on the suction side that needs the shaving cream test to locate.
