Why Air Bubbles Come From the Return Jets
Your pump creates suction. Any opening in the suction side between the pool and the pump lets air in. That air travels through the impeller and exits through the return jets as bubbles. The size of the bubbles tells you something useful: large intermittent bubbles usually mean a bigger air pocket working through the system — a loose union or a partially open valve. Continuous fine bubbles mean a small but consistent leak. Both are the same root cause, just different leak sizes.

5 Causes — Check in This Exact Order
1. Strainer Lid O-Ring — About 55% of Cases
The most common cause by far. Remove the lid, inspect the O-ring, clean the groove, coat with Magic Lube, and reseat. A O-ring that looks fine can still fail to seal if the groove has debris in it. O-rings run $4–8 and take 3 minutes to replace. I’ve fixed more air bubble problems with a tube of Magic Lube than with any other part.
2. Union O-Rings at Pump Inlet — About 20% of Cases
The collar-style unions connecting suction plumbing to the pump inlet use O-rings that degrade over 2–4 seasons. Unscrew, swap the O-ring ($3–10), hand-tighten. Check both the suction and return unions while you’re there.
3. Suction Valve Stem Leak — About 12% of Cases
Ball valves and gate valves on the suction side can develop leaks around the stem that only appear under vacuum. Shaving cream test will find this — the cream disappears into the valve stem under suction. Replace the valve or apply PTFE tape to the stem as a temporary fix.
4. Low Water Level or Vortex at Skimmer — About 8% of Cases
If pool water drops below mid-skimmer, the skimmer pulls a vortex of air at the throat. Fill the pool. If water level is fine but you’re still getting air, check the skimmer weir flap — a jammed-open weir lets air in directly at the skimmer mouth.
5. Cracked Pump Housing or Fitting — About 5% of Cases
Hairline cracks in the pump volute or PVC fittings that aren’t visible at rest become active under pump vacuum. The shaving cream test finds these too. PVC fitting cracks need replacement; a cracked volute on a pump over 8 years old usually means a new pump.
The Shaving Cream Test
Apply regular shaving cream — not gel — to every fitting on the suction side while the pump is running. The pump pulls vacuum and where there’s an opening, the cream gets sucked in. Work the suction side in order: lid O-ring groove first, then union collars, then valve stems, then any pipe fittings going back toward the skimmer. One tube of shaving cream finds 90% of air leaks in under 5 minutes.
Apply shaving cream to plumbing fittings only. Keep it away from the motor housing, electrical conduit entry, and rear of the pump. Do the test while the pump is running — that’s when the vacuum is active.
Prevention
Lubricate the strainer lid O-ring with Magic Lube every spring. Inspect union O-rings during your seasonal opening — they should look round and supple, not flat. Keep the pool water at mid-skimmer level. A $6 tube of Magic Lube prevents 55% of air bubble calls.
