Step-by-Step Pool Pump Installation

Step 1: Turn Off Power and Prepare the Work Area

Turn off the pump circuit at the breaker — not just the switch or timer. Verify with a non-contact voltage tester at the timer or pump terminals. Close the suction and return valves. Drain the strainer housing by removing the lid and letting water empty out.

Step 2: Disconnect the Old Pump

Remove the wiring from the old motor (photograph the terminal block first). Unscrew the union collars on the suction and return sides — these are the threaded rings that connect the plumbing to the pump. Most installations have union fittings on both sides that allow the pump to be removed without cutting pipe. If there are no unions, you’ll need to cut the pipe and install unions during the new pump installation — add $20–30 in union fittings and an hour of work.

Step 3: Position the New Pump

Position the new pump on the equipment pad. The suction inlet (strainer basket end) should face toward the plumbing coming from the skimmer. The motor should have at least 6 inches of clearance on all sides for airflow. Some pads have bolt holes for mounting — use them if available with rubber isolation feet between the motor base and the pad.

Step 4: Connect the Plumbing

Pool pump connections use union fittings — a threaded male adapter glued into the pump port, a union socket that accepts the pipe from the plumbing, and a threaded collar that connects them. The union O-ring seals the connection. Inspect the existing union O-rings and replace them if they’re flat or cracked ($3–10 each). Installing the pump backwards: The inlet (basket side) connects to the suction line from the skimmer. The outlet connects to the filter.
