DE Powder Returning to the Pool

A single torn grid is enough to pass DE through. Open the filter tank, remove the grid assembly, and inspect each grid individually — hold each up to light and look for holes, tears, or separated seams. Normal operating pressure for a DE filter right after cleaning is your baseline — typically 8–15 PSI for residential systems. If pressure climbs to 8+ PSI above baseline, it’s time to backwash. Don’t breathe the dry powder, don’t eat it, keep it out of your eyes. The quantities used in pool maintenance — a few pounds — aren’t a significant health risk with basic precautions.
My pump is losing pressure quickly after DE addition — what’s wrong?
Rapid pressure climb right after adding DE usually means the old DE wasn’t fully backwashed out and you’re adding new DE on top of clogged grids.
