6 Causes of Low Filter Pressure
1. Clogged Strainer Basket — About 50% of Low-Pressure Calls
A strainer basket packed with leaves, hair, and debris restricts flow before it even reaches the impeller. The pump runs, but it’s starved for water — pressure is low and flow from the returns is weak. Open the basket, clean it thoroughly, and check your pressure again. This takes 3 minutes and fixes roughly half of all low-pressure complaints. If you haven’t cleaned the basket in more than a week, do it before anything else.
2. Air Leak on the Suction Side — About 20% of Cases
An air leak lets air into the suction line. The pump tries to pull water but gets a mix of water and air, which reduces effective flow and drops pressure. Signs: air bubbles visible in the strainer basket while running, pressure fluctuating rather than steady at a low reading. Hair and debris jammed in the impeller reduces flow while the motor still sounds normal. This is a gradual degradation rather than a sudden change — pressure has been slowly dropping over months. Compare current pressure to what the system ran at when the filter was new. More than 5 PSI of gradual drop over a season points to worn wet-end components.
6. Low Pool Water Level — About 3% of Cases
If pool water drops below the skimmer mouth, the pump pulls a vortex of air. Pressure drops and the pump may lose prime. Check water level first on any pool that’s been losing water from evaporation or a leak.
Low Pressure After Installing a New Variable-Speed Pump
If you recently replaced a single-speed pump with a VS pump and pressure is now lower than before, that’s normal and expected. A VS pump running at 1,200 RPM generates much less pressure than a single-speed at 3,450 RPM. Establish your new VS baseline after running the pump at your normal filtration speed for a few days with a clean filter. Don’t compare VS baseline to old single-speed baseline.
